MAHAMAYA: Rabindranath Tagore
MAHAMAYA
The story opens with Mahamaya as a beautiful young woman whose parents, for whatever reasons, have not yet found a suitable groom for her. She is of a Kulin Brahman family, the highest rank of Brahmans. She falls in love with a young man of the village, Rajib, who is a Brahman, but not a Kulin Brahman. When Mahamaya’s father finds out about their love, to protect the rank of the family he immediately arranges an alternative marriage for Mahamaya to a Kulin Brahman man.
The story generally informs the reader the importance of social status in ancient India, wherein the poor can’t be wed to a person who is has higher social status, it opens the eyes of the reader to one of the most hostile fate of a woman. It also seeks to inform the readers that one single decision could change our lives forever; we can never bring back the things that are lost no matter how much we pray for it. What we can do is to live with, accept our decision and try to bring out good things from it.
The author of the story tells the reader about the importance of social rank in ancient India, where the poor cannot marry someone of higher rank, and it exposes the reader to one of the most terrible fates a woman can face.It also aims to inform readers that a single decision can affect our life forever;no matter how we wish for it takes us back to the past,we will never be able to bring back what has been done.
In light of Mahamayas experience, I believe that even though their love tale isn't smooth, they nevertheless manage to make it worthwhile. I was delighted to read this story because it was centered around a love story. The tale of a girl who knew someone couldn't be the person she loved. Though they don't end happily ever after, I could see and feel that they truly loved one other in the Mahamaya story, therefore it was a pleasant love story in my opinion. Rajib was a gentleman, respectful, and devoted person because he would stop at nothing to express his love for ahamaya, who is arguably the most attractive woman he has ever seen.
